Device, Software, - What to Expect

Thank you for your patience in this continually challenging situation. You will find answers to commonly asked questions below. We will update this information as our situation evolves.

What device does my child need?
Distance Learners will have the best learning experience with a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook computer.

Tablets and iPads may work for some activities but may not be the best device to fully experience distance learning.

Smartphones are not suggested for distance learning.

Will Rockvale Elementary be providing devices to distance learners?
Laptops will be made available to those families in need. Each family will need to complete a responsibility agreement form to obtain a laptop. Please reach out to your teacher if one is needed.

What apps does my distance learner need?
Your child's device should have the Google Chrome web browser installed. Google Chrome is available here.

How does my child access distance learning resources?
All distance learning experiences will be accessed through Clever and our learning management system, Kiddom.

To access Kiddom, students will go the Rockvale website, click the Clever link in Student Resources, and then log-in to Clever. Once in Clever, students will have access to Kiddom where they will see their assignments and resources, and other learning apps.

How does my child log-in to Clever?
Students will use the username and password or scan-able Clever badge provided by the teacher. The first time your child logs into Clever, she/he will need to include @student.rcschools.net after their username.

If you have multiple children sharing a device, you will want to use the scan-able Clever badge to simplify the sign-in process or log in different user when prompted.

What if my child does not have a username and password yet?
Students that are new to RCS may experience delays receiving usernames and passwords since these are processed by our Central Office and the Tennessee State Department of Education. Your child's teacher will provide this information as soon as possible.

How will my child access Zoom meetings?
Unlike what many adults have become used to when using Zoom, students will access distance learning with Zoom by going to their Teacher's Clever Page and clicking on the Zoom link. Students will not need to download and install Zoom.

Meeting times and further instructions is forthcoming.

How long will my child be online each day?
This will vary from class to class, depending on the assignments that the teacher has posted. More information about schedules, expectations, and curriculum for distance learners will be provided in the coming weeks.

However, students WILL NOT be expected to sit in front a computer for 6+ hours a day watching Zoom meetings and completing activities.

What do I do if I have multiple children that are sharing a device and their meetings are at the same time?
RCS has developed a plan for live Zoom meetings and recorded Zoom meetings. If students cannot attend a live Zoom meeting, they can watch the recording of the meeting later. Teachers will be posting links to recorded meetings on their Teacher Clever pages. More instructions will follow in the coming days.

How do I monitor my child's progress?
Parents can monitor their children's assignments through the Kiddom app. More information will be coming soon.

What if I have multiple children sharing a device?

Option 1: Make sure that your students’ teachers have supplied each student with a Clever badge. Each student will use it to log in and out of Clever/I-Ready. (HIGHLY SUGGESTED)

Option 2: Designate a browser for each child to exclusively use when using I-Ready.
(not available for iPad)

Option 3: Create a guest profile or different profile for each student to use on your laptop or desktop. (not available for iPad)

How much time should my child spend on I-Ready?

This will vary from class to class. However, students should not spend more than 45 minutes per week on I-Ready Math and 45 minutes per week on I-Ready Reading. Excessive use of I-Ready will lead to burnout.
