Student/Parent Resources

Reading Ideas
-Before reading a book – point out the title, read the author and
illustrator’s names (ask what they do) and have your child identify the
title page and what information is given on it.
-While reading a book, let your child point out HFW, discuss the
illustrations and explain any unfamiliar words to them. You can ask your
child questions throughout the book as you read it.
-After reading a book, ask your child to name the characters, the setting,
identify the problem and solution within the book and then retell the
story in the correct order (beginning, middle and end).
HFW Practice
-Make HFW flash cards and have students read them, spell them and then make
up a verbal sentence using the word correctly.
-Students can spell out HFW using different materials/objects around the house
(cereal, pasta, blocks, Legos, beads…)
-Students can also write HFW in shaving cream (fun and a little messy).
-Students can write a sentence or two and then highlight/color/circle any HFW
they used in their sentence.
-Parents can create a self-made Bingo board using HFW and then have child play
Bingo (we fill the entire board before they are allowed to Bingo ͧͨͩͪ).
-Parents can hide HFW cards around the house and have child find them and read
them as they gather the cards.
-Students can spell out HFW with magnetic letters if you have some available.
-Parents can write HFW on upside down cups (any type or size) and have child read
the word and then begin to build a tower as they read additional words.
